One of my favorite meals of the day is breakfast! I love my pancakes and waffles, so we found this local breakfast place called Pocahontas Pancakes and decided that we would start off our journey here!
I ordered waffles and they were absolutely delicious. The entire place was decorated like the Pocahontas movie and even had totem poles inside, we left completely stuffed and would definitely return if we ever head back up that way.
Our first stop was the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. This is a 26 mile tunnel that is both a tourist place as well as convenient for people trying to get from Virginia Beach to Virginia's Eastern Shore. There are two 1 mile tunnels as well as four man made islands along this route. We made the toll to drive all the way across!
It was super windy and it was really cold even though it was March!
Here is a map and I'm pointing to the place we stopped. One of the man-made islands had a gift shop and a restaurant on it!
On our way to go shopping at several of the large shopping centers we stumbled across this farmer's market. It is a year round Farmer's Market that has everything from fruits and veggies in addition to things like candles, ice cream, flowers, and garden supplies, and decorations. We had a wonderful time walking through all the little shops
This is a view from our hotel room! We love all these hotels that are right now the beach! And the best part is that since their main seasons are in the summer time, it is super cheap to visit in the fall/winter time.
We found this upscale area nearby and decided to have a birthday dinner at Bravo. It was a wonderfully romantic dinner and we enjoyed stuffing our faces with decadent Italian food. We also welcomed the upscale area. The city that we live in is definitely far from "upscale" and nice.
This is a sunrise that is just so beautiful coming up over the ocean. It is amazing to finally see the sunrise rising up over the ocean as opposed to the sun setting over the ocean. I would say that watching the sunset is much more romantic, but watching the sunrise is extremely exhilarating.
We found this Fishing Pier that also had several tourists shops on it. We really enjoyed walking up and down the beach on the boardwalk. There were not many people out and the weather was great.
We really wanted to go tour a lighthouse. But it happened to be on a military base, they had to inspect our car. We were a little surprised, but we didn't mind since we didn't have anything to hide....it was just messy since we had spent quite a bit of time in the car.
This is the new and still being used lighthouse, I'm not sure what it is called. We weren't allowed to get very close to it, since it was on a military base. But we had really wanted to see the old lighthouse.
This is the Cape Henry Lighthouse, once used as a lighthouse, now is a tourist attraction. We were really looking forward to checking it out, climbing all the stairs, and getting to see the view from the top.
We had some fun taking pictures with the lighthouse in the background!
Then we headed into Norfolk to tour the city a little bit. We found a really nice mall and enjoyed strolling around the streets and checking out all the awesome brick buildings.
Then we found the USS Wisconsin which is found at the Nauticus Maritime Center. There is also a really nice park located in the perimeter.
So that was my birthday weekend in a nutshell. Much different than most of our typical trips. They are usually full of history, museums, and sight-seeing, but this trip was all about me...shopping and the beach! Woo hoo!!!! :)
